This 24 minute VHS/DVD, along with an accompanying Participant Workbook, helps managers and subordinates improve their ability to carry out steps essential to the coaching and performance management process. Managers learn how to be better coaches, and employees at all levels learn how be constructive and proactive in their own development.
The video provides practical tips and demonstrations of how to:
Establish goals for the development of competencies needed to meet business goals.
Observe the demonstration of competencies on-the-job.
Coach subordinates to develop competencies.
Conduct and participate in a progress review meeting.
Conduct and participate in a career planning meeting.
The two main characters are Teresa, a department manager, and Don, a shift supervisor who reports to Teresa. Teresa will describe the performance management process and then go through several key phases with Don, including performance planning, reviewing progress and discussing career development, using the Resource Guide as a tool along the way. Don, with Teresa's coaching, finds a creative way to develop, through practice, the Influencing Others competency. A peer of Don's, Luke, is also featured in several scenes.
The video was originally produced as the result of our Managing Performance [82kb PDF] workshops for managers. After conducting numerous workshops, it became clear that some managers continued to have a difficult time understanding competencies and writing competency development goals tied to business goals. Good models of coaching were also hard to find. The video was created to fill this void.
The 30-page Participant Workbook [1.4mb PDF] reinforces the learning points in the video and helps participants apply the learnings to real-life situations. It includes helpful worksheets and examples. It is highly recommended that our Resource Guide (print or on-line version), the Value-Added Employee book or your own 'resource guide' for developing competencies should be made available to employees as a part of this program. A 16-page Leader's Guide [150kb PDF] outlines various ways to use the video, including time-lines and agendas, exercises, discussion points and debriefing questions.
Note: Although this 24 minute video can be run in its entirety and be debriefed at the conclusion, at three different points in the tape, pauses have been suggested in order to de-brief key segments and prepare for the next segment.
