This 3-day workshop teaches HR professionals the six-step process to developing their own competency models without external assistance. Learn to collect, code, and analyze the data needed to build models using resource panels, job analysis interviews and structured event interviews.

Topics include:

  • How to build competency models for multiple jobs in an organization
  • How to develop or tailor a competency dictionary, and integrate off-the-shelf lists from PDI, Lominger, DDI, etc.
  • How to successfully implement a sustainable competency system
  • Talent management, assessment, selection and retention
  • Succession planning and performance management

Meet the Instructor

Richard Gerlach
Richard Gerlach has trained more than 800 HR professionals to build competency models and human resource applications. He has completed consulting projects for organizations that include Franklin Templeton, Braskem, Mary Kay, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Michael Baker Corporation, Nuclear Fuel Services, FirstGroup America, GTECH, Samsung, John Deere, Electrolux, and the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation.

His experience includes senior level HR and talent management positions for Fortune 500 corporations, including Ryder System, Inc. Dick has a MBA from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor's Degree in Finance from Western Michigan University.

Our 3-day Building & Implementing Competency Models Certification Workshop was modified to devote more time to plan the implementation of the various competency modeling approaches, and on the development of three high priority HR applications.


Braskem (formerly Sunoco Chemical):

Tailored a 3-day workshop that combined the essentials of both the building competency models and building technical competencies sessions for the HR staff. The workshop also focused on developing a consistent approach for building models throughout the company.

Franklin Templeton:

A 2-day working session to review the essentials of building competency models with the company's HRD staff. John Deere:

The company had started a process to build technical competency models for a number of roles within the organization. We developed and conducted a 1-day working session to review the essentials of technical competencies and use these principles to review and revise the work done to date.


U.S. Department of Defense, Inspector General Office:

Two 4-day on-site sessions for the staff that are charged with building models for their organization. The workshops included both building competency models and building technical models.
